With the lack of public transport options such as the metro or tram, the city of Ljubljana is primarily adapted to car infrastructure. Years ago, there were numerous construction pits and degraded areas, which became so-called temporary parking lots. The Top project began as a research of temporary parking lots, their documentation and a series of interviews with the people working there.
While observing and visiting them, I decided to symbolically establish another parking lot. Since it was meant to be a guerilla public intervention and not a functional parking, it took place at a location inaccessible to vehicles. The intervention was carried out on a 1m high platform, which is actually the roof of underground private garages. The title Top refers not only to the location but also to the word TOP as “the best”.
In addition to painting parking spaces, the project was completed by two more actions. Firstly, the parking ticket office was installed, which is a wooden structure with plastic advertisements of actual parking lots. Secondly, I summed up the turbo competitive advertising logic, seen in emphasizing the words top and king as something superior to the competition. The advertisement posters for top parking were created on the back sides of authentic posters and were then installed on city-light boxes throughout the city, replacing the existing ones.
The ads were removed within a day. At the initiative of local residents, the ticket cabin was removed after one week. The paintings of the parking spaces were done with permanent color and were retained on the location.
