welcome
The action was carried out on the opening day of the center rog in Ljubljana.
The center Rog was created on the foundations of the former autonomous Rog factory. During the fifteen years of the autonomous community, numerous collectives were established in Rog - a skate park, a social center, a refugee center, help for drug addicts, art studios, exhibition spaces, a circus, dance studio, etc. The eviction of the squat took place in the early morning hours during the Covid measures, when there were only a few squatters in the factory. The authorities used force during the eviction, followed by orchestrated media coverage against former users.
The visual identity of the new center undoubtedly sums up the playfulness and relaxedness that characterized the autonomous factory. However, in the resulting context, it acts as a trivial commodification of the past of space, which is today the center of profit-oriented cultural industries.
For the opening day, I prepared posters that combine photographs of the eviction with a new visual identity of the Center Rog. The posters were guerrilla-style installed in the immediate vicinity of the center along all incoming routes an hour before the opening. The word welcome (dobrodošli in Slovenian) stands out on the posters.
At the opening, entrance was by invitation only, so the gathered cultural workers and citizens of Ljubljana were instead met by a police cordon in front of the entrance.
Is there a better illustration of the polarization of society caused by the gentrification of the city?
