WORK IN PROGRESS
Visual literacy is part of our everyday communication and activities. In a world oversaturated with images, I find it interesting that seemingly identical images often carry different, sometimes completely contradictory meanings.
Work in Progress is an unfinished, spontaneously growing collection of artworks, artifacts, and everyday objects linked by the visual representation of the human figure with a tool. The exploration of contexts in which this motif appears has gradually grown from what was originally a random set of various belongings depicting a "worker". I limited my collection to the two most commonly used tools, the hammer and the shovel.
So far, the collection includes artworks by both renowned and folk artists, images from popular culture, company logos, a football fan symbol, a sports club logo, memorabilia, postage stamps and badges, jewellery, medals, historical money, cryptocurrency illustrations, religious and historical objects and images, documents of protest demonstrations, documents of murals, propaganda posters, book covers, heroes from fairy tales and cartoons, toys and so on.
Physical coexistence of artifacts linked by the same visual motif transcends individual contexts and allows a contemplation of complex sociological and cultural relationships. In layman's terms, we could say that the symbol of the figure holding a tool in its hand is supra-ideological.
