OWN ISLAND is the title of an ongoing series of works in which I create visually and socially engaging situations on small islands. The islands are either existing natural formations or artificially constructed platforms made for the purpose of the work.
Own Island – Vacation is the title of a spontaneous performative action that took place at the height of summer 2024 in Kranj. While strolling through the city, I came across a small islet that became my temporary retreat. For a few hours, I indulged in a capitalist dream – sipping a cocktail and casually reading a newspaper under a parasol on my very own island.
Own Island – Nomad is the title of an installation created on an artificial lake in Chemnitz. On a floating platform that mimics a sandy island, I placed a tent as a symbol of nomadic life. The island itself is already nomadic by nature, as, unlike natural, static islands, it constantly shifts its position on the surface of the lake. In this way, the work addresses the idea of freedom and independence on one hand, while creating a sense of isolation and estrangement on the other.
After a performative action that included staying in the tent and preparing a meal on the islet, the work continued its life as a situational installation. Over time, the island became a FAVOURED stop for local birds, an occasional dwelling for passing nomads, and a source of curiosity for passers-by.
