SCREENSHOT
This project started spontaneously, when I noticed an old ad board in my neighborhood that had fallen down. This happened precisely at the time when the city authorities announced the removal of illegal advertisements, which would mainly limit the visibility of small businesses that cannot afford billboard advertisements.
I photographed the board, took it to a studio and restored it, before returning it to the place where it originally stood. The renovation also included a new image on the board – a photograph of the object on the ground. The board thus became the bearer of its own image. At this stage, the original advertisement was still legible in the photo.
After four months, I found the board lying on the ground again. I repeated the same process and returned it to its original position. At this point, the board was already provoking reactions from passers-by, who regularly stopped and observed it. After two more weeks, it was back on the ground, probably deliberately knocked down, as it was very weighted and stable. Not long after that, I repeated the exercise once more and the board was in its position, with the latest image.
At a certain point, the board disappeared from the spot. Given that the city has begun infrastructure development in the area, the removal of the board along with part of the grassy area was part of the area's preparation for redevelopment. With the help of communal workers, the board was located at the recycling dump from where I got it back to the studio. In a short time, bicycle paths were built in the area where the sign previously stood. Since it was not possible to install it again I transformed the board into a free-standing sculpture.
Thus, the board, with all its visible traces and composite layers of photos, became a witness to the micro-changes of a public space. The city is constantly changing, beyond our perception. We quickly internalize visible changes, while former images of the city fall into oblivion even faster.
The whole process took place between December 2022 and May 2024, when the sign was transformed into a sculpture.
